Beyond Words: Cultivating a True Love for God
I just had a prayer session with some dads, and our theme was "Loving God". It's something we all claim to do as Catholics, but honestly speaking, we mostly fall short. Moreover, what God wants is different from the love we show our family and friends that can be broken down to "languages". Which type do you think God appreciates?
The first commandment calls us to love God using all our heart, soul, and mind, a profound and comprehensive directive. It can seem overwhelming to fulfil this command, especially considering how we often find it challenging to fully cherish those who are physically present. If we struggle with people we can see and talk to, how can we be expected to extend that same depth of love, and more, to an invisible God?
Our difficulty in loving God mirrors the challenges we face in building connections. We frequently overlook His presence in our daily experiences, not because it is absent, but due to our failure to pause and acknowledge it. The busyness of life often distracts us from nurturing this important relationship, leading us to neglect the effort needed to perceive His influence amidst our routines.
To truly embrace God, we must be intentional about seeking Him out. Setting aside dedicated time for prayer and reflection helps us to better recognise His presence in our lives. Just as we try to strengthen our human relationships, we should do the same with God and allow His grace to transform us.
Also, as one could show love for a spouse through our care for our children, we can express our devotion to God by serving others. By loving and helping His people, we honour Him and make our faith more tangible. This connection weaves our spiritual commitment into our everyday actions, making God a bigger part of our lives.
